Laura Wolvaardt is a South African professional cricketer born on 26 April 1999 in Milnerton, Cape Town, in the Western Cape.
A right-handed opening batter known for her elegant technique, particularly her cover drive, and composed temperament, she has represented the South Africa women’s national team since her international debut in 2016 at the age of 16.
She has captained the side across formats since 2024 and is widely regarded as one of the leading batters in women’s cricket.
Beyond the field, she excelled academically, graduating from Parklands College in 2017 as head prefect with seven distinctions and ranking top of her class.
She later pursued studies in life sciences, completing a Bachelor of Science degree cum laude while balancing her cricket career, having initially considered a path in medicine.
Siblings
Laura has one sibling, a younger brother named Luca Wolvaardt.
Luca shares a strong interest in sports and has focused on golf, regularly posting training clips and aiming to pursue it professionally.
Their parents are Frederik Wolvaardt, a nuclear engineer with additional expertise and qualifications in paleontology, and Jessie Wolvaardt, a language trainer of Belgian background who has taught Dutch.
Career
Wolvaardt began playing cricket at a young age, joining boys’ games at school before progressing through age-group structures.
She debuted for Western Province in domestic cricket as a teenager around 2013 and earned recognition as Cricket South Africa’s under-19 female cricketer of the year.

Her international career started with an ODI debut against England on 7 February 2016, followed by a T20I debut against Ireland later that year and a Test debut against England in 2022.
She quickly established herself with a maiden international century in 2016 against Ireland, becoming the youngest South African (male or female) to score a hundred in international cricket.
As an opener, she has accumulated substantial runs across formats.
In ODIs she has scored over 5,600 runs at an average exceeding 50, placing her among the all-time leading run-scorers in the format, with multiple centuries including a career-best of 184 not out.
In T20Is she has surpassed 2,700 runs with several hundreds, and she has also registered a Test century.
She became only the third woman to score centuries in all three international formats.
Domestically and in franchise cricket she has featured for Western Province and Northerns in South Africa, Adelaide Strikers and previously Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League, teams in The Hundred such as Northern Superchargers, Manchester Originals and Southern Brave, Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League, and more recently Delhi Capitals.
Under her captaincy South Africa reached the final of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup and the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup.
Accolades
Wolvaardt was named Cricket South Africa Women’s Newcomer of the Year in 2017 and later claimed the Women’s Cricketer of the Year award on multiple occasions, including in 2020 and subsequent seasons where she swept categories such as ODI Player of the Year, T20I Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Year.
She has been selected in ICC Women’s Team of the Year sides and received nominations for top ICC individual awards.
In domestic recognition she was named Sport Personality of the Year at the Sport Industry Awards.
Team achievements under her leadership include runner-up finishes at the 2023 and 2024 Women’s T20 World Cups and the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, where she finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer.
She has also earned Player of the Match and series awards for standout performances, including record-breaking scores in major tournaments.
