The National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA) has received a newly constructed 16-classroom training block aimed at enhancing the capacity of the National Police Service (NPS) to deliver specialised and professional criminal investigations training.
The facility was constructed with support from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), through its Counter Drug Element (AFCE), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The facility was officially handed over during a ceremony presided over by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho and attended by senior NPS officials, representatives of the United States Government and other strategic partners.
Speaking during the ceremony, IG Kanja described the facility as an important investment in the knowledge, skills and professional capacity required to address emerging and increasingly sophisticated forms of crime.
He thanked AFRICOM and the US Government for their continued partnership in strengthening the capacity of the National Police Service.
Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin said the true value of the facility would be measured by the quality of investigators trained there.
“Every officer trained here represents an investment in stronger investigations, better justice outcomes and safer communities,” Amin said.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Eliud Lagat congratulated the DCI and the NCIA commandant on the new facility, noting that it matched the standards of the academy.
Representing AFRICOM, Major General William E. Temple said the partnership was ultimately about developing people and institutional capability.
He said supporting institutions such as NCIA would help build the knowledge and skills law enforcement professionals require to address current and future security challenges.
The new 16-classroom block will allow the academy to conduct multiple training programmes concurrently, accommodate larger cohorts and improve the learning environment for officers undertaking specialised training and continuous professional development.
The handover marks a milestone in strengthening NCIA’s role as the National Police Service’s premier institution for training criminal investigators, while deepening cooperation between the NPS, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and international partners.
