A teacher and a student have died after an aircraft belonging to the Kenya School of Flying crashed during a training exercise in Kipeto, Kajiado West, on Friday morning.
Kajiado West Police Commander Maureen Kuto confirmed that the aircraft had two people on board when it went down near a wind power plant.
She said the student died at the scene, while the instructor succumbed to injuries while being rushed to Kajiado Referral Hospital.
“The first victim succumbed at the scene while the second succumbed while being rushed to hospital,” Kuto said.
Preliminary reports indicate that poor visibility caused by heavy morning mist may have contributed to the accident.
According to Kuto, the pilot attempted to make a crash landing after encountering the poor visibility, but the aircraft ultimately crashed.
The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending other procedures.
Emergency responders and members of the public gathered at the scene, where the aircraft was found extensively damaged. Pieces of its metal casing, luggage believed to belong to the occupants and other items were scattered around the crash site.
Police said aviation experts had been called in to examine the wreckage and establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident adds to a series of accidents involving training aircraft and pilot trainees in Kenya, although investigations are expected to establish the precise cause of Friday’s crash.
