Ryan David Rickelton is a South African international cricketer born on 11 July 1996 in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
A left-handed wicket-keeper batter, he stands around 5 feet 10 inches tall and has represented South Africa across all formats since his Test debut in 2022.
He grew up in a sports-oriented household, attending St Stithians College where his father, Ian Rickelton, served as director of sport for many years and coached him from a young age.
His mother, Penny Rickelton, was a provincial squash player.
Rickelton studied at the University of Johannesburg and briefly spent time in New Zealand early in his development.
Siblings
Ryan has one sibling, an older brother named Dean Rickelton.
Dean played cricket and rugby during his school years but chose not to pursue sports professionally.
He later studied IT, moved to the United Kingdom, and settled there with his wife, Tamie-Lee Rickelton.
While Ryan showed intense dedication to cricket from a young age, including staying up late to watch matches, Dean took a more relaxed approach to sports and focused on other paths.
Career
Rickelton began his domestic career with Gauteng, making his first-class debut in the 2015/16 season.

He quickly established himself as a consistent run-scorer, topping the charts for Gauteng in the 2017–18 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge with 351 runs and in the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup with 562 runs.
He later played for the Lions franchise, captaining them at times, and featured in competitions such as the Mzansi Super League for Jozi Stars.
Overseas, he has represented Northamptonshire and Yorkshire in English county cricket, as well as MI Cape Town in the SA20 league and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
Internationally, he made his Test debut against Bangladesh on 31 March 2022.
His ODI debut followed against the West Indies in March 2023, and his T20I debut came against the same opposition in May 2024.
As a top-order batter and wicket-keeper, he has contributed across formats, including notable performances in the SA20 where he has been a leading run-scorer and key player in title-winning campaigns.
His first-class record includes a high volume of runs and centuries, reflecting steady progression from domestic success to regular national selection.
Accolades
Rickelton was part of the South African team that won the 2023–2025 World Test Championship, contributing to the country’s second ICC title.
He scored a double century of 259 in a Test against Pakistan at Newlands in January 2025, marking a major personal milestone.
In limited-overs cricket, he has registered an ODI century and strong performances in T20 competitions.
Domestically, he earned multiple Lions awards, including Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season for 2022–23, along with batting and fielding honours in the 4-Day and One-Day competitions.
He has also received Player of the Match recognition in international fixtures, such as for a century in the Champions Trophy.
