The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has demanded answers from former President Uhuru Kenyatta following his remarks that the late Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election.
In a statement dated September 24, 2026, ODM Party Leader Dr Oburu Oginga said Kenyatta’s remarks confirmed what the party had believed and maintained after the election.
Oginga said ODM had, however, accepted the outcome after exhausting the constitutional avenues available to challenge the election results, choosing to move on in the interest of national stability.
The ODM leader questioned why Kenyatta had allowed the transfer of power to President William Ruto if he was convinced that Raila had won the election.
“Why is this revelation important now, four years later, and not when the said electoral injustice occurred?” Oginga asked.
He also questioned why Kenyatta’s administration facilitated the transfer of power to Ruto if the former president believed that he had not won the election.
“Third, what exactly does President Kenyatta expect the Kenyan people to do with this information today?” Oginga asked.
According to Oginga, the remarks have reopened a painful chapter for ODM and millions of Kenyans who supported Odinga in the 2022 election.
He said ODM had made significant political sacrifices during its relationship with the Kenyatta administration, particularly following the 2018 Handshake between Kenyatta and Odinga.
Oginga said the party lowered its political ambitions in the interest of national unity and stability and did not demand Cabinet or administrative positions in Kenyatta’s government despite its political strength.
He added that ODM made further concessions ahead of the 2022 election, including relinquishing its pursuit of key elective positions such as the Nairobi governorship, in support of the presidential candidature and wider coalition arrangement.
“These are not academic questions. Elections concern the sovereign will of the people and the legitimacy of government,” Oginga said.
He warned against using the 2022 election and Odinga’s political legacy as material for contemporary political campaigns.
“Having reopened this matter, President Kenyatta should tell the country the whole story,” Oginga said.
The statement comes as political debate over the 2022 presidential election has resurfaced following Kenyatta’s remarks on the outcome of the closely contested election.
