Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has declared a one-month amnesty for individuals holding illicit firearms, ammunition and other small arms and light weapons to voluntarily surrender them to the authorities.

The amnesty was announced on Tuesday during the launch of Africa Amnesty Month 2026 at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja delivered Murkomen’s speech during the event, where the CS urged individuals and groups in possession of illegal weapons to use the amnesty period to surrender them without fear.

Murkomen said voluntary disarmament was critical to reducing armed conflict and strengthening peace and security across the country.

He urged communities to abandon the use of firearms to resolve disputes, saying conflicts should instead be addressed through lawful and peaceful mechanisms.

“Conflicts must not be settled by the might of a firearm, but by the force of law. The property of one community can no longer be allowed to change hands through the crack of gunfire, but through willing exchange in the marketplace,” Murkomen said.

The CS said the government remained committed to tackling the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons, which have contributed to insecurity and armed conflicts in parts of the country.

The amnesty forms part of Kenya’s participation in Africa Amnesty Month, an initiative aimed at encouraging the voluntary surrender of illicit firearms and ammunition while promoting peace and security.

Authorities are expected to use the one-month window to encourage individuals holding illegal weapons to hand them over voluntarily as part of broader efforts to reduce the circulation of firearms in communities.
