Police have apologized to the Chinese nationals arrested on Wednesday during a raid at CGTN offices, formerly CCTV.

At least 13 people were arrested in what was believed to be an operation targeting illegal immigrants without work permits.

“The raid on the Chinese state-owned broadcaster was based on false information. We sincerely apologise for the mishap… Those detained were released later,” Police spokesman, Charles Owino told Reuters.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, the Chinese embassy immediately lodged a complaint to the government which had the nationals released.

“The Kenyan side has already apologised to the Chinese side about the improper law enforcement, and promised they will constrain the actions of police at the grassroots … and prevent such incidents from happening again,” she said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta attended a two day China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit in Beijing where he sought assurances that half of the cost of Sh380 billion extension of the SGR between Naivasha and Kisumu would be financed through a grant.

But according to Transport CS James Macharia, Kenya will have to complete the feasibility study, “not just for Naivasha to Kisumu but also all the way from Mombasa to Kisumu so that we can establish its commercial viability.”
