Eldas MP Adan Keynan, Supreme Court Judge Smokin Wanjala and Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service (KUCCPS) CEO Dr John Muraguri have fake degrees from non-existence Commonwealth University.

They join embattled Nairobi County Speaker Beatrice Elachi who according to evidence in possession of Kahawa Tungu bought the doctorate degree for Ksh655,000 which the Commonwealth University listed as award “summit fees.”

In April, a local daily reported that Keynan’s and Wanjala’s honorary degrees were awarded during a recent graduation ceremony, without mentioning the exact dates the degrees were awarded, a suggestion of dubiety in the matter.

Muraguri on his part received his honorary doctorate degree on December 14, 2017, almost five months before Wanjala’s and Keynan’s were reported in the local news.

The honorary degree mill is believed to be operated by Nigerians based in Uganda.

It is not the first time the Nigerians are luring prominent Kenyans to receive honorary degrees, of course at a small fees.

In April last year, Larry Madowo was lured to the trap,  but chose to shame the mill online and never bothered to pursue it with them. The letter sent to Madowo with grammatical errors offered him a doctorate degree at a ‘small’ fees of $4,000 (Ksh400,000).

“These nice people are inviting me to a seminar in Singapore & offering me a honorary doctorate for the low, low price of just $4,000,” tweeted Madowo.

The invitation letter was written ‘achor’ instead of anchor. High class institutions do not have a place for such errors

In May 2016, Boniface Mwangi received a similar invitation to a leadership summit  in Dubai, where he was required to pay $5,500 (Ksh550,000) for his honorary degree.

Coincidentally, all the letters were sent from Nigeria, address 419. A view of the address on Google Maps shows a place that looks like a residential area, and not a school.

Seemingly, Wanjala, Kaynan, Elachi and Muraguri could have been lured to take the lucrative deal, or driven by greed and pride to become ‘great’.
