There was drama in the August House after Speaker Justin Muturi upheld the first vote passing the 8% fuel tax as proposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Speaker had initially called for a second round of voting and adjourning the sitting for 15 minutes for a review by the ICT department.

This now means that the 1.5 tax for housing will take effect as soon as the President signs the Bill into law.

The opposing legislators are blaming the speaker, Majority Leader Aden Duale, Minority leader John Mbadi and Junet Mohammed for the chaotic vote that has seen the Finance Bill sail through.

Speaking to journalists after the contentious vote, Duale admitted to asking his “troops” to retreat to make sure that the 233 threshold is not met.

The screens showed that there were 352 MPs yet Parliament has 349 members only.
