Pierre Francois Aubameyang has been appointed as the new coach of Gabon men’s national team, the Panthers, to replace Spaniard Jose Antonio Camacho, who recently left the team at the end of his contract.

53-year-old Aubameyang senior is the father of Arsenal striker and former African footballer of the year Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.

Francois, who captained the Panthers to their maiden Afcon in 1994, will be assisted by another former international Daniel Cousin while Amegasse Francois will serve as General Manager.

Cousin, 41, formerly of Hull City, scored 13 times in 53 international appearances and graced three Afcons (2000, 2010 and 2012) with the Panthers.

“Given the urgency and the current situation, it was decided to constitute, around the Panthers of Gabon, group of coaches with a very good knowledge of Gabonese football and its environment,” Gabon FA said.

“These three former captains of the national football team deserve, with their strong knowledge on the field and experience of top level competitions, to transmit their experience and tactical abilities to the team.”

The new technical bench’s immediate mandate will be to qualify the Panthers for the 2019 Afcon in Cameroon.

The first competitive games for the duo are in mid-October, with back to back 2019 qualifiers against South Sudan.
