Legendary Gor Mahia striker Peter “Omuga” Dawo has been appointed the head of Kisumu County government’s Directorate of Sports.

“The County has with immediate effect appointed the legendary football player Peter Dawo as the head of sports directorate,” Achie Alai, the County’s sports minister said.

Dawo’s immediate task will be to organize a one day sports stakeholders’ workshop in Kisumu on 16 November 2018.

The aim of the meeting will be to “hear from the different disciplines on their plans and strategies.”

“This will be geared towards discussions on sporting heritage, using this as a foundation and inspiration for establishing initiatives aimed at becoming the county’s sports powerhouse,” Ms Alai added.

Alai further disclosed that “one of the world’s most renowned footballers” will visit the city of Kisumu on 10th Nov, 2018.

The county government plans to meet their sponsored team Kisumu All Stars on 26 October 2018 “to discuss a common strategy for the sustainable development of the club.”

Alai also reiterated the administration’s plan to refurbish Moi Stadium.

Dawo was a mainstay for Gor Mahia as they won the 1987 Caf Winners’ Cup, a first for any club in the region to date.

He was also among pioneer Kenyan footballers to turn professional after he signed for Egyptian side Arab Contractors in the 90s.

His career was however cut shot by a nagging knee injury.
