Nairobi County senator Johnson Sakaja on Thursday said that it is hypocritical of the government to bring down the 12 storey Seefar Apartments as it pushes for affordable housing.

Seefar Apartments, located in Nyayo Highrise were earmarked for demolition last week on Friday after it was found that it sits on riparian land.

According to Sakaja, it is unfair for the state to demolish the building after approving its construction.

“It is unfair for the government to approve a building and to come later and demolish the same,” he noted during a tour of the building.

Initially NEMA and WARMA had given Edermann Property management 14 days to bring down the property but have since extended it to 30 days.

“Please note, the order [to demolition the building] still holds, but however, it is extended to 30 days to allow consultation and investigation to guide the authorities decision,” a statement from NEMA read in part.

Echoing the legislator’s sentiments was Highrise MCA Kennedy Oyugi who sought to understand whether the county government approved the construction of a building on a dam reserve.

“The management of this apartment has provided all approval documents by the county, NEMA, WARMA and national construction authority. The county should tell if they approved a building on a dam reserve,” Oyugi said.
