Kenya is through to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in fifteen years.

The confirmation came following Friday’s Extraordinary meeting of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee in Accra – Ghana to determine the fate of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone, who are in Group F of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers alongside Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia have not been able to play their last three matches due to a FIFA ban on their FA.

With just one round of group matches to go, CAF has decided to scrap all past results involving the West African nation leaving the group with only three teams.

Sierra Leone had only played two matches in the campaign and since they are less than 50% of the total matches (6), CAF decided to nullify all the past results involving the country in accordance with the qualifying rules.

The Leone Stars beat Kenya 2-1 at home last year before falling by a solitary goal away to Ethiopia in their second outing this year before the ban came down hard on them.

As it stands Kenya tops the group on seven points followed by Ghana with a point-less with Ethiopia a distant third on three points.

Kenya will play the Black Stars of Ghana in match day six in March next year to determine who runs away with the group as the two teams are already through.

Kenya’s Harambee Stars last graced the continental showpiece in 2004 in Tunisia and failed successively to make a return until now.

Stars, who have been nominated for the Team of The Year Award by CAF, beat Ghana 1-0 at home, drew 0-0 away to Ethiopia before hammering them 3-0 in the return leg to qualify.
