Why Kisumu’s Urban Radio Fired Edward Kwach and Promoted Grace Makosewe

Edward Kwach went to Kisumu in 2013 to start Urban Radio. He didn’t last long there after being fired from former Easy FM and now Nation FM. So the owners of Western Kenya’s leading FM station, Urban Radio, decided to fire Edward Kwach because there were no cheques coming into the company while leading presenters were all being pampered and hosted by Edward Kwach for parties.

Most of the time, Kwach didn’t arrive in the office and he just nursed his hangover in Kisumu or Nairobi (where he flew to every weekend). It was a mystery how Kwach socialised with his potential clients in Kisumu off radio if he was in Nairobi all the time. But you know that Edward Kwach is used to being fired. They have fired him from over 6 Radio stations – Capital FM, Kiss FM, EA Radio, Nation FM and now Urban radio.

So Grace Makosewe whom indisciplined made to leave Capital FM also has taken over from Kwach in the breakfast show at Urban Radio. Grace lacks self discipline. She is about 40 years old and lives with her mum in Ngummo. She ran away from Capital FM for 2 weeks for no reason. She claimed all manner of things against Cess which nobody is corroborating including her shemale friend and former producer of Capital FM’s the Jam, Vinnie.

We hope that Kisumu might drive some discipline into Grace Makosewe’s head. Urban Radio is trying to cover 12 counties from Kericho towards the Western side of Kenya. So they basically target Kisumu, Kericho, Homabay, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Migori, Nyamira, Kisii, Siaya, Vihiga and Eldoret. Again from analysts, most Kenyan college students come from these counties and they are the target.

They are not trying to compete with Capital FM which has the worst radio content in the country. It is now just turned into advert churning machine. It gets all the money despite just reaching less than 4% of Nairobi’s middle class. Capital FM’s reception outside Nairobi is very poor.

Kisumu’s Urban Radio is owned by a group of investors led by John Mark Wandolo who was formerly with KCB, Corporate Banking Director. He was among the senior managers laid off by the current KCB CEO Joshua Oigara when he took over from Martin Oduor Otieno.
