The government of Uganda has deported the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) MTN Uganda Mr Wim Vanhelleputte and in his place Gordian Kyomukama appointed. Kyomukama was the MTN’s chief technology officer.
Sources in Uganda say that the Belgian national was deported for sponsoring Kyadondo East Mp Robert Kyangulanyi alias Bobi Wine’s activities who has been considered an enemy of President Yoweri Museveni.
In a letter, Uganda’s Internal Affairs Minister Gen Jeje Odongo, said that Vanhelleputte was deported over issues of “national security”.
“He’s already at the airport and destined for Belgium around midnight. Over similar circumstances of national security,” said police spokesman Fred Enanga.
This comes only a few days after three other foreign employees of the telecommunication company were arrested and deported. They include the mobile money general manager Mr Olivier Prentout, Ms Elsa Mussolini and Annie Tabura.
