Officer commanding police division (OCPD) position has been scrapped in the National Police Service (NPS) and in its place a new position instituted, the sub-county police commanders (SCPC).

This will see the number of the commanders reduce from 597 OCPDs to 322 SCPCs in the changes aimed at aligning the NPS to the current administrative boundaries.

For instance, Nairobi county will have 11 SCPCs instead of 14 OCPDs. Some of the former OCPDs have been appointed as SCPCs.

Michael Muchiri, former OCPD Kilimani will now be the SCPC Kibra. Kayole on the other hand has been placed under Njiru sub-county with senior superintendent of police (SSP) Wilson Kosgei being in charge.

Starehe sub-county, which will include the Central Police Station, will be under Stanley Atavachi.

Nyeri will have eight SCPCs, Kirinyaga five, Kiambu 13, Murang’a eight and Nyandarua seven.

In Mombasa County there will be six SCPCs namely Mr Eliud Arumba (Mombasa Central) Mr Daudi Loronyokwe (Changamwe), Mr Julius Irungu (Kisauni), Mr Benjamin Rotich (Likoni), Mr James Mutua (Jomvu) and Ms Jane Njeri Mukuria (Nyali).

Officer commanding station (OCS) posts may also be phased out and their place taken by ward commanders.

Also, the three arms of the police service, the Kenya Police Service (KPS), the Administration Police Service (APS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), will receive orders from one commander unlike in the previous structure.

The new commanders of the police force include regional police commander (RPC), county police commander (CPC), sub-county police commander (SCPC) and ward commander.
