Rumours are rife that a number of East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) were on Friday hospitalized following a cholera outbreak at one of the canteens.

According to an insider source, the canteen in question is run by Lesan Caterers.

Kahawa Tungu has learnt that a number of people were hospitalized after consuming dinner on that particular evening.

These, our source indicates, were not the usual food poisoning cases.

“…it’s not just a case of food poisoning. And that restaurant is notorious for food poisoning but never this serious,” our source said.

The canteen, we understand is frequented mainly by the “lower cadre employees” working at the factory.

The working conditions at the Lesan Caterers run canteen, the source intimated, are pathetic. Numerous complaints have been lodged against the ways in which food. An unidentified contractor, Kahawa Tungu understands, had their staffers take their meals at a “kibanda” outside the factory.

This was due to the increased number of food poisoning incidents.

A contractor identified as Bollore and a few others however still have their workers eating from this particular canteen.

Cholera according to Mayo Clinic, is spread through contaminated water and if left untreated can be fatal, in a matter of hours.

It causes severe diarrhea and dehydration.

According to a 2018 report, there was a decline in the epidemic. During week 30 (week ending 29 July 2018), 11 new cases were reported compared to 18 cases reported in week 29.

These new cases emerged from Mombasa county. Cumulatively a total of 26,544 cases including 421 deaths have been reported since the beginning of the outbreak in December 2014. Of these, a total of 5,734 cases and 78 deaths have been reported in 2018.
