Deported MTN Uganda CEO Wim Vanhelleputte has taken to court to protest his deportation, terming it as illegal and an abuse of his rights by the government of Uganda.
In court papers, Vanhelleputte says that he did not commit any crime that warranted him a deportation therefore wanted the deportation order quashed.
“The applicant has never committed any offence or criminal act under the laws of Uganda and neither is he responsible for breaking any law. That there’s no lawful reason whatsoever for his deportation. That it is in the interest of justice that his deportation be quashed,” read his affidavit in part.
He has also been married to Babra Adoso Vanhelleputte, a Ugandan citizen since April 29, 2000, and together they have two children aged 17 and 13.
“Our marriage was celebrated both in Uganda and Belgium. That I and my wife have two children namely Vanhelleputte Jonathan aged 17 and Vanhelleputte Jason 13,” he adds.

A part from quashing the deportation order, Vanhelleputte wants the court to order for payment of general damages for illegal detention and deportation.
Vanhelleputte was deported mid last month and in his place Gordian Kyomukama appointed. Kyomukama was the MTN’s chief technology officer.
The Belgian national was deported for sponsoring Kyadondo East Mp Robert Kyangulanyi alias Bobi Wine’s activities who has been considered an enemy of President Yoweri Museveni.
A few days before the incidence, three other foreign employees of the telecommunication company were arrested and deported. They include the mobile money general manager Mr Olivier Prentout, Ms Elsa Mussolini and Annie Tabura.
