Tanzania thumped neighbours Uganda 3-0 on Sunday to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The Taifa Stars made the cut for the first time since qualifying for the 1980 edition in Nigeria, 39 years ago.

Heading into the crunch, Tanzania needed to win and pray Lesotho does not beat Cape Verde in Praia in another Group L game.

Three goals from Simon Msuva, Erasto Nyoni and Aggrey Morris sealed the qualification for coach Emmanuel Amunike’s side before a fully packed Uhuru Stadium, Dar as Cape Verde settled for a barren draw with Lesotho.

Tanzania become the fourth East African team to qualify for the 32nd edition of the continental championship after Uganda, Kenya and Burundi.
