Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko promises to punish rogue county askaris who lobbed a teargas canister into a matatu within the Central Business District (CBD).

The askaris popularly known as kanjo threw teargas into a matatu injuring three passengers and setting it on fire.

According to the Umoja bound bus driver, Patrick Kariuki, the askaris who were in the company of police officers took the car keys from him and at some point assaulted him.

“I did nothing wrong because I had parked the vehicle by the roadside and I was not blocking anyone. I was only picking passengers and there were other matatus around,” Kariuki told reporters.

He further mentioned that his conductor had also been clobbered by the notorious askaris.

Sonko, upon receiving word about the Tom Mboya street incident, apologized to the passengers who could hardly breathe due to the smoke.

“Hawa watakiona. Why throw tear gas canister to passengers when provoked by psv operators. My apologies kwa wale wametupiwa tear gas,” the county chief wrote on Facebook.
