While Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko tries to clean up the city of the lot that is corruption, there seems to be one area that he has overlooked.

According to a source privy to the details, the City mortuary is a cash cow for crooked police officers, attendants and some gate-men.

Kahawa Tungu has learnt that while burial permits for disposal of bodies are issued free of charge in all facilities, private or public, at the city mortuary, relatives of deceased persons are duped to pay so as to obtain this crucial document, parting with cash ranging from Sh2,000 to Sh3,500 without knowledge of the County Govt of Nairobi.

The Clerk in-charge of issuing burial permits has been identified as Ibrahim Nakuti and shares the loot with his boss, the funeral superintendent a Mr David Wanjohi.

Similarly, while postmortem services by government pathologists are supposed to be offered for free at this facility, some money-hungry mortuary attendant by the name Solomon Nyongesa has waiting relatives pay a doctor (pathologist) through him.

Nyongesa has the bereaved families believe that the remains of their loved one(s) will not be examined.

They part with monies ranging between Sh5,000 to Sh30,000. The pathologist, we understand has no clue what happens behind the scenes.

The source further intimated that some targeted relatives are asked to pay or clear all mortuary charges with the “master conman”.

Mortuary fees are payable to the County Government via Paybill and include; fixed charges of about Sh5,500 and daily charges of Sh500.

But once they give the cash as agreed, the man arranges for dressing of the body, dispatch from mortuary and safe passage through the gate.

“Clearly, a number of mortuary attendants and gate men are involved in this cartel. I believe the funeral superintendent too, who is in charge all staff, is aware of this smuggling…” our source states.

Kahawa Tungu also understands that at least four policemen are irregularly stationed at the mortuary to extort unsuspecting relatives of deceased persons by charging them Sh2,000 to Sh10,000 for filling postmortem forms.

This document is supposed to be issued for free at police stations or DCI offices in which a death case is being investigated.

These policemen are allegedly from Kilimani, Muthaiga and Pangani police stations.
