    Atwoli Defends MPs Over Pay Increase, Says Kenyans ‘Pester’ Them For Handouts

    COTU Secretary General Francil Atwoli has backed the calls by Members of Parliament to raise their salaries stating that the legislators were constantly being followed by Kenyans for handouts.

    He called upon Kenyans on Kenyans to focus on the fight against corruption instead of always begging from members of parliament.

    “Kenyans might think that I am crazy, but I am supporting MPs to demand more from you taxpayers due to your behaviour,” Atwoli said.

    He said that Kenyans had developed a habit of asking MPs for hand outs forcing them to engage in illegal activities in order to please Kenyans.

    “Those are some of the things that push people to steal from public coffers in order to become presidents,” Atwoli said.

    He wa speaking during a press conference with KTN.

    The members of  the National Assembly and the Senate have passed Sh1 billion in house allowances they bulldozed through despite opposition from the Treasury and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

    The allowances, add up to Sh936 million, comprising Sh250,000 on monthly allowance for each of the 416 members of the two Houses, backdated to August last year the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), resolved to pay house allowances over and above their mortgages.
