Activist asks EACC to act on claims of fraud at school in Bonchari, Kisii County

U.S.-based journalist cum activist Peter Makori wants the Ethics and AntiâCorruption Commission (EACC) to press graft charges against a school principal over missing cash.
He claimed at least Sh11.5 million so far cannot be accounted for at the school in Bonchari, Kisii County.
Makori said he had held talks with education and EACC officials over the claims.
“Today I have had talks both with the director of Education and the EACC and as a community we ask that action be taken and the money recovered to help in the uplifting of the school infrastructure,” Makori told journalists at a Kisii hotel on Thursday.
Makori also questioned the commitment of the area MP Dr Charles Onchoke for failing to make a follow up on the case even after being reported to him.
He cited growing concerns from parents over the alleged financial irregularity.
The principal is believed to have diverted money meant for infrastructure development and supplies.
The structure that was under construction was abandoned midway for lack of funds.
“This is money that was meant to improve the learning environment for our schools in Bonchari and there should be accountability and transparency,” he said.
He told Onchoke to use his oversight role to push for an audit of the school’s finances and ensure those found culpable face disciplinary action.
“We cannot allow public institutions to be turned into personal cash cows. The students deserve better,” he added.
Failure by the relevant agencies to act would embolden similar conduct by other school administrators thus undermining public trust in the education system and misusing funds meant for students, stated Makori.
There was no immediate comment from the accused school officials. The EACC said they will investigate the claims.
