Alex Gorsky is a prominent American businessman best known for his long tenure at Johnson & Johnson, where he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Born in 1960 in Kansas City, Kansas, he is the third of six children born to Albert (Al) and Loretta (née Bartolac) Gorsky.
His grandparents immigrated to the United States from Russia and Croatia, contributing to a family background rooted in hard work and opportunity in a middle-class American setting.
The family relocated to Fremont, Michigan, when Alex was 12 years old, following his father’s career move to a marketing executive role at Gerber Foods after serving as a Korean War veteran.

He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree and commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army’s Artillery Branch.

He rose to the rank of captain, earning the Ranger tab and Airborne wings while serving in Europe and Panama over six years.
In 1988, he left the military, married Patricia Dittrich (a cardiac nurse he met during his service), and joined Johnson & Johnson as a sales representative for its Janssen Pharmaceutica subsidiary.
Over the following decades, he advanced through various roles in sales, marketing, and management across different business units, geographies, and divisions.
He earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1996.
Key milestones included becoming President of Janssen in 2001 and Company Group Chairman for pharmaceuticals.
In 2012, he was appointed Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, becoming the seventh person to hold the dual role since the company went public in 1944.
Under his leadership until stepping down as CEO in January 2022 (remaining Executive Chairman briefly thereafter), the company significantly grew its revenue, navigated major challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic (where J&J developed and distributed a vaccine), and emphasized innovation in healthcare.
