Kenyan Man Alfred Gitau Dies Following Lake Accident In The US

Seven months after leaving Kenya in search of greener pastures in the United States, Alfred Ng’ang’a Gitau is no more.

Gitau, 35, left in September 2018 and has been working in construction as he fends for his family back in Kenya.

“Gitau left Kenya for Washington in September 2018 in search of greener pastures and was working in construction to upgrade the economic situation of his family back in Kenya and leaves behind a 3-year-old son,” his cousin Lawrence Njoroge said.

The father of one who hails from Mwiki, Kasarani, drowned in Lake Chelan in Washington DC on Saturday afternoon after an inflatable kayak that he was travelling in with a friend capsized.

According to Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, the deceased was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the unfortunate incident.

He was in the company of a friend, Jackson Njaru, who made a lucky escape.

The sheriff also noted that they received distress calls at around 2:49pm. Witness accounts indicate that he was momentarily seen on the surface and a couple of minutes later he disappeared.

His remains were recovered at a depth of about 30 feet by a diver at around 4pm, the same day.

Kenyans living in the US will hold a fundraiser on Sunday to help raise money to cover the mortuary and shipping fees.

These will cost at least Sh1 million.

He will be laid to rest in Kiambaa, Kiambu county.
