Andrew Balbirnie is an Irish professional cricketer born on 28 December 1990 in Dublin, Ireland.
A right-handed batsman and occasional wicket-keeper who also bowls right-arm off-break, he has been a mainstay of the Ireland national team across formats since his international debut.
Educated at St. Andrew’s College in Dublin, he progressed through Ireland’s age-group and Under-19 systems, captaining the side at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup.
He was one of the eleven players who featured in Ireland’s inaugural Test match against Pakistan in May 2018 at Malahide.
Balbirnie later served as captain of the Ireland side in all three formats and remains the Test captain.
He has also played domestic and franchise cricket for sides including Middlesex, Glamorgan, Leinster Lightning and Khulna Tigers.
Siblings
Andrew is one of three sons of Ashley Balbirnie and Candy Lappin. His two brothers are Harry and Jack Balbirnie.
The family moved to Sandymount in Dublin when the boys were young and lived close to a cricket ground, which helped foster a shared love of the game.
All three brothers played cricket growing up, and their parents regularly attended their matches.
