She was married to comedian, actor, and director Mel Brooks from 1964 until her passing, and the couple had one son, author Max Brooks.

Anne was the middle of three daughters born to Michael Gregory Italiano, a dress pattern maker, and Mildred Carmela Di Napoli, a telephone operator.
Her older sister was Joanne and her younger sister was Phyllis.
The sisters grew up in a close-knit Italian-American family in the Bronx.

Career
Bancroft began her career in the early 1950s under the name Anne Marno before adopting her stage name.
She studied at institutions including the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Actors Studio.
Her breakthrough came on Broadway with The Miracle Worker (1959), in which she portrayed Annie Sullivan, the teacher of Helen Keller.
She reprised the role in the 1962 film adaptation, which brought her international fame.
She became iconic for her portrayal of the seductive Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate (1967), a role that defined her in popular culture despite her own mixed feelings about it.
Over the years, she delivered memorable performances in films such as The Pumpkin Eater (1964), The Turning Point (1977), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987), Torch Song Trilogy (1988), and G.I. Jane (1997).
Bancroft also worked in television, earning acclaim for roles in productions like Deep in My Heart (1999).
