Equity Bank, starting Wednesday, August 1 lowered the interest rate charged on loans to a maximum of 13%p.a to reflect the new Central Bank Rate (CBR) of 9%. This move comes a few days after CBK announced the drop in rates. The relief the lender said will apply to new and existing loans, including group loans, microfinance loans and mobile loans as well as credit cards. Kenya’s mortgage lender HF Group on Tuesday announced a plan to lay off nine per cent of its employees in line with its recently launched digital banking strategy. The Group’s Managing Director Frank Ireri noted that the restructuring would result in merger, redundancy and creation of new roles. “By rationalizing roles, we are providing the appropriate gearing towards future growth and addressing current issues such as operating costs for the business which have remained high and hindered our ability to operate profitably,” Ireri said. Governor Mike Sonko has unveiled the new look of Eastleigh First Avenue after completion of the beautification exercise. The move was welcomed by city lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi who congratulated the county boss for work well done. The Equity Bank airlift program to global universities including Ivy League institutions has this year reached a value of Kshs 11.13 billion. 64 beneficiaries joining the program this year have already been admitted on full scholarships. The lender further extended a stipend of between Kshs 100,000 and Kshs 200,000 to each of the 64 scholars leaving the country, totaling to Kshs 11.4 million for their travel and other essentials. Lawyer Apollo Mboya has dragged Kenya Power and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to court over the new billing structure. The senior counsel says that the new structure discriminates against domestic consumers while rewarding industrial bulk power consumers. In an application filed under certificate of urgency, Mboya wants the court to suspend the implementation of the retail tariffs which according to ERC took effect on August 1. The Nairobi County government on Thursday took down illegal structures in Nairobi’s Lavington area. The morning operation saw traders engage the police in running battles as they refused to leave their places of work. Kenya Airways on Thursday morning experienced flight disruption due to bad weather. The national carrier said the foggy weather prevented the aircraft from landing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
