Nine of 14 prisoners who escaped from Nanyuki G.K prison on Saturday will serve two years for the offence. Eight of the escapees were recaptured on Saturday while Francis Kamau Nduati was nabbed on Sunday in Kirinyaga following a tip off from members of the public. On Monday, Kenya confirmed 54 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the country’s case load to 248,515, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has announced. The new infections were from a sample size of 2,501, recording a positivity rate of 2.2 per cent. The cumulative tests stand at 1,537,382. Fatalities have reached 5,109 after another seven patients succumbed to the disease. A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer has faulted the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for terminating a case against Justice Sankale ole Kantai. John Gachomo, a senior assistant Inspector General of Police, accused the ODPP that is headed by Noordin Haji, of illegally terminating investigations against the appellate judge who was cleared of any wrongdoing in August. “The DPP can only terminate criminal proceedings instituted by his office and not criminal investigations being undertaken by DCI while exercising its constitutional mandate,” court papers read. Former State House digital communications director Dennis Itumbi is in yet another legal battle after a Nairobi businessman sued him for alleged defamation. Mike Maina Kamau has sued Itumbi for linking him to the Kiambaa by-election poll which was won by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, John Njuguna Wanjiku. The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into a shooting incident involving a cop. The police officer is said to have fatally shot a bodaboda rider, Rabin Aboki, along Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi. Two bread bakers have been charged with work permit fraud. Appearing before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi, Anandkumar Bharatkumar Modi and Keval Umit Shah were charged with forging an online application requesting the Immigration Department to cancel the permit. The High Court has barred Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) director general Mohamed Badi from attending Cabinet meetings. Justice Anthony Mrima on Thursday also prohibited Badi from discharging any functions of the Cabinet.
