Eight people including Bishop Margaret Wanjiru’s driver have now clocked a week at the Gigiri Police Station cells following the disappearance of the Bishop’s car spare tyre. According to people close to the ‘servant of the Lord’, her spare tyre got stolen last week on Friday while her new Landcruiser Prado was packed outside the compound in her Runda home. The United Nations (UN) has appointed Inger Andersen as the head of UN environment programme (UNEP), replacing departed Erik Solheim who was unceremoniously pushed out last year. Ms Andersen is a Danish economist and environmentalist who has been heading International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) NGO. The news were broken by UN deputy secretary general, Amina Mohammed in an ambassadors meeting on Thursday, where she said that the secretary general António Guterres had chosen Anderson to head UNEP. The police have arrested a ‘garbage collector’, Alex Maina, from Embakasi who was photographed with a gun earlier today. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the man was arrested after Kenyans on social media shared his photo online and alerted the police. Seven people have lost their lives in a grisly accident along Nakuru-Kericho Road involving a matatu and a petroleum tanker. The two are said to have been involved in a head-on-collision. The accident occurred at Kapmakaa area in Chepsir. Media reports indicate that six people died on the spot while one succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The government of Uganda has deported the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) MTN Uganda Mr Wim Vanhelleputte and in his place Gordian Kyomukama appointed. Kyomukama was the MTN’s chief technology officer. Sources in Uganda say that the Belgian national was deported for sponsoring Kyadondo East Mp Robert Kyangulanyi alias Bobi Wine’s activities who has been considered an enemy of President Yoweri Museveni. It is a fortnight since the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended vehicle registration for system audit in connection to Dusit D2 attack. The exercise was halted in a bid to clean the system, which was marred with a scandal of duplicate number plates for different cars. The High Court has sentenced former Ruaraka OCS Nahashon Mutua to death for killing trader Martin Koome in 2013 in a police cell. “The Prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the police caused the deceased suffering while in cells which caused his death,” Lady Justice Stella Mutuku ruled on Thursday. Patients going for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) CT scans at the Aga Khan University Hospital will have their costs covered fully by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). This is the first service of the kind in the East and Central Africa region, where most patients to India, Turkey, the US and South Africa for such scans. Daily Nation photojournalist Phoebe Okall has disputed claims that photos of rare African black panther (black leopard) shot by Nick Pilfold, a global conservation scientist at the San Diego Zoo, were the first since 1909.
