He is currently the highest paid footballer in the world and he is African. Cameroon’s Samuel Etoo is reported to have launched a mobile network called Set’Mobile in his home country. “Set” stands for Samuel Eto’o and the mobile network becomes the third in the country with a mobile penetration still under 20% (estimated at around 14.8%). Samuel Etoo has launched the network with a capital base of Cameroon’s CFA franc 100 Million (US $195,000), a general manager and an associate partner – Charles Gueret. Etoo hopes that the network with help lower the cost of calls, while offering services such as calls,…
Facebook acquired Snaptu and then removed support for various apps and the one affected most was Twitter. More than 26 million users in emerging markets depended on Snaptu for feature phones, mainly Nokia and Samsung, as the only way to get Facebook, Twitter and others services. With Facebook stopping to support Twitter and other services on Snaptu, we found a very good work around which impressed even the Snaptu Chief technology Officer (CTO), Barak Naveh. Now snaptu did a smart thing and made it almost impossible to use the workaround after the discovery. So Snaptu has announced that it is…
BY KALYA TEAM In his epistle to the Galatians, the apostle Paul in his letter (Gal 5:6) shocked the early church by declaring that “For in Christ, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision availeth anything but faith which worketh by love!” This declaration had been occasioned by falsehoods and seditious teachings that had crept into the church through certain factions that emphasized a puritanian approach to salvation. Paul, seeing that this approach would cause anarchy in the entire gentile world, sought to straighten things out. Indeed, this teaching has been the foundation of the doctrine of salvation by faith throughout Christendom. This…

Apparently Safaricom has tried through its mother company, Vodafone UK, to get Apple to consider shifting the exclusive iPhone deal from France telcom to itself. This has failed. Orange Kenya still has the exclusivity in the market if not the region. In the meantime, Orange Kenya is not selling the iPhone 4 to any individual client as from about July 2011. The device is being sold exclusively to only selected corporate clients. Now you understand why since launch, Orange Kenya has not sold more than 1,000 pieces of iPhone in Kenyan yet this is one of the most sought after device…
His names are Moses Gichanga Mwaura and he is a Phd research student at Warwick University in the UK. It is a really captivating though not so unique considering that this is an existing innovation. Moses was formerly employed by Nation Media and Zain Kenya as a software engineer before founding the KenyaBit company. His project is well featured on University of Warwick’s website as well as on Metanomy which has promised to…
Could you do Twitter via postal mail, Facebook via faxt and or YouTube via SMS? Those are some of the questions posed by Giles Turnbull on Twitter. Giles then went ahead and sent tweets via snail mail. In an article on The Morning News, Giles gave reasons why he decided to try the project called “Twitter-by-post”: Tweeting by post made me appreciate the online and the offline. Brevity is a good thing, but there’s no reason we should only be brief on Twitter. The internet is a marvelous thing, but so is cheese, so are close friends who know your opinions and…
Microsoft announced the launch of its “first-ever ‘Africa Pack’” on Wednesday 14th December. The pack is nothing but a collection off some freely available, rejected and lousy software which can also be downloaded from microsoft.com. While making the announcement, Microsoft claims that many Africans cannot afford the cost of downloading the software hence the reason why it is making the “Africa Pack” collection. That is one of the most stupid argument I have ever heard. How well spread out is Microsoft distribution? From what I know, the poor distribution of Microsoft is one of the main reason why piracy of…
CCK seems not to be in safe hands now. The information and communication regulator has chickened out in almost every directive they initially issued in the recent past. First it was the issue of the Mobile termination rates then the digital signal distributions and broadcast licenses, followed by the number portability and now counterfeit phones. All arguments fronted by CCK Director General, Francis Wamukota Wangusi, looks both foolish and trivial in all the cases. On mobile termination rates and under pressure from Safaricom and Orange, CCK had no excuse at all but to act on orders from baba (President Kibaki)…

Google is activating around 700k Android devices every single day. Some laud the achievement while a good number of online commentators believe that the growth of Android is declining. Andy Rubin, Google’s SVP of Mobile, tweeted and posted the stats on his Google Plus profile last night. This means that some 4,900,000 new Android devices are activated each week and 255,500,000 devices each year. Google’s Eric Schmidt revealed at LeWeb last week that Android activations was at 550,000 devices per day. Rubin tweeted in June that there were 500,000 activations per day and that the figure was increasing by 4.4% per…
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was such a great thing Kenyans expected to stop their over dependence on networks which don’t serve their connectivity needs since they feared losing their popular lines. It never solved much. We hear that Porting Access Kenya is going to complain to the new Chief Justice over abuse of court process as the porting case has been left hanging without any dates or specific gag order. “The blanket order is really bad for the industry”, a source in the industry intimates. Now according to Pakistan Today, Pakistan has banned Mobile Number Portability because of terrorism fears.…
