Newly released body camera footage shows the chaotic moments leading up to the fatal shooting of a US citizen by an immigration officer in Texas last year, which only recently came to light. Gunfire rings out in the nighttime footage when Ruben Ray Martinez, 23, pulls his car forwards as law enforcement try to stop him on 15 March 2025 in the beach community of South Padre Island. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not publicly disclose an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer killed Martinez until the detail emerged in media last month. DHS have said Martinez “accelerated…
Former US presidents, celebrities and thousands of members of the public have gathered to honour civil rights leader, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, who died last month. Former presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton were among those who spoke at a memorial service in Chicago for the activist. Mourners included former Vice President Kamala Harris, filmmaker Tyler Perry and former basketball star Isiah Thomas. The service also featured performances, including from singer and actress Jennifer Hudson. Jackson, who worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr, twice ran to be the Democratic nominee for president and founded the Rainbow PUSH coalition,…
US President Donald Trump has demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender” as the American and Israeli military continued to launch strikes. Trump said the US and allies would make Iran “economically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before” after it picked “acceptable” new leadership. With the war close to entering a second week, it remains unclear who will lead Iran after the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei a week ago, or on what terms the US would end its offensive against Tehran, which has triggered region-wide retaliatory strikes. Speaking on Friday, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the administration expected military…
On 17 February, the Indian Navy posted a cheerful message on X. “Welcome!” it wrote, greeting the Iranian warship Iris Dena as it steamed into the port of Visakhapatnam to join an international naval gathering. Photographs showed sailors in crisp whites and a grey frigate gliding in the sea harbour on a clear day. The hashtags spoke of “Bridges of Friendship” and “United Through Oceans”. Two weeks later the ship, carrying 130 sailors, lay at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. It had been torpedoed by a US submarine off Sri Lanka’s southern coast on 4 March. Commissioned in 2021,…

Police are investigating claims a hotel owner was abducted by six armed men outside his premises in Pumwani, Nairobi, in the early hours of Thursday morning. According to witnesses, the incident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. outside Paradise Hotel, located opposite Pumwani Hospital. The National Assembly Thursday passed the National Infrastructure Fund Bill 2026, which now awaits assent by President William Ruto to become law. The Bill, which was approved with significant amendments, gives Parliament and the President more power in the control of the much-publicised Sh5 trillion fund, expected to boost Ruto’s “Singapore dream” of transforming Kenya into a developed country. The Bill, which has been touted as one of the most consequential in the history of Kenya’s Parliament since Sessional Paper No.10 spearheaded by former Minister for Economic Planning Thomas Joseph Mboya in 1965, sailed through Parliament with crucial amendments. Parliament…
At least 18 people, including seven troops, were killed when jihadists raided a base and a nearby community in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state near the Cameroon border, residents, militia members and rangers told AFP on Thursday. Africa’s most populous nation is battling a 16-year insurgency, with the Nigerian army’s attempts to fight the uptick in radical Islamist violence complicated by the presence of other armed groups in the region. Fighters from the Boko Haram jihadist group attacked an army base outside Ngoshe village in Gwoza district late on Tuesday, dislodging the soldiers after a fierce gun battle, sources told AFP.…
Meta is facing a new lawsuit over its AI smart glasses and their lack of privacy, after an investigation by Swedish newspapers found that workers at a Kenya-based subcontractor are reviewing footage from customers’ glasses, which included sensitive content, like nudity, people having sex, and using the toilet. Meta claimed it was blurring faces in images, but sources disputed that this blurring consistently worked, reports noted. The news prompted the U.K. regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office, to investigate the matter. Now, the tech giant is facing a lawsuit in the United States, as well. In the newly filed complaint, plaintiffs…
Sooner or later, advisers in President Donald Trump’s orbit all come to learn the same unwritten rule: no-one can outshine the boss. Kristi Noem, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, became the latest reminder of that on Thursday when Trump announced he was removing her as the face of the administration’s crackdown on immigration. Noem will be replaced by Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin at the end of the month, Trump said in a post on Truth Social. The US Senate will have to confirm him in the post. The president said Noem would move to a new job…
The White House has praised the US House of Representatives for rebuffing a bid to halt President Donald Trump’s military action in Iran, a day after a similar measure collapsed in the Senate. The House war powers resolution – rejected in a narrow vote of 219-212 – was largely symbolic and would have been unlikely to survive an expected veto from the president. Democrats have criticised Trump for launching strikes without congressional approval and questioned whether the US was facing the kind of “imminent” threat that would justify the president ordering strikes on his own. The US and Israel launched…
Two dozen states in the US sued the Trump administration, seeking to block the latest tariffs announced by the White House. The lawsuit, filed on Thursday, adds to the uncertainties surrounding trade policy, after the US Supreme Court ruled that many of the duties President Donald Trump had announced last year were illegal. The White House swiftly responded by imposing a temporary 10% tariff under a different law – Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. But the state officials, all Democrats, say that tariff is also illegal, arguing that the law was not meant to address trade imbalances. According…

The high-level conference, convened in collaboration with the British High Commission Nairobi, brought together international liaison officers, senior law enforcement officials, policymakers and security experts from across East and Southern Africa.
