Kenya has announced 260 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours from a sample size of 5,873. The country’s caseload is now at 102,613. From the new cases reported, 220 are Kenyans while 40 are foreigners. In terms of gender, 141 are male while are 119 female with age ranging from one to 87 years. On a better note, 83 have recovered from the virus bringing the tally for recoveries to 84,873. 58 patients were from home-based care programme while 25 were from various hospital facilities across the country. The Jubilee Party has threatened to take disciplinary actions against Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who fail to support the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), Constitutional Amendment Bill. Through a letter by Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju directed to all majority leaders in the county assemblies, dire actions will be taken on MCAs who fail to heed the party decision. An early morning accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway has left eight people dead and two others seriously injured. This has been confirmed by Gilgil Sub County police Commander John Onditi who indicated that the accident took place at 5 AM. The accident involved a trailer and a matatu where the latter was headed to Nairobi from Nakuru with the former going in the opposite direction. Homa Bay has become the third county Assembly to pass the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Constitutional Amendment Bill. Last week, Siaya County became the first to pass the BBI bill, with members of the county assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) leading residents in public hearings on Tuesday. President Uhuru Kenyatta has hinted at lifting curfew should Kenyans behave and heed to the measures of curbing COVID-19 spread. Nyandarua County Assembly speaker James Wahome Ndegwa has been impeached over gross misconduct and abuse of office. 27 out of 31 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) voted in support of his ouster. Last month, on January 8, MCAs moved to have the speaker impeached despite a court ruling giving him time to respond to the allegations leveled against him. 30 out of 39 MCAs voted for his ouster. On Monday, a 5-judge bench ruling presided by Justice Joel Ngugi stopped the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from conducting a referendum on the Building Bridges Initiative Bill (BBI).
