The US economy grew faster than previously thought this spring, fuelled by robust consumer spending and falling imports, according to new government data. Gross domestic product (GDP), which measures goods and services production, rose at an annualised rate of 3.8% in the period from April through June – up from the previous estimate of 3.3%. The second quarter growth – the fastest pace in nearly two years – followed a contraction earlier this year. “[It] reflected a decrease in imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, and an increase in consumer spending,” the Commerce Department said. Canada’s Supreme Court has delayed a planned execution of nearly 400 ostriches at a farm in British Columbia over an avian flu outbreak, after the farm owners protested the cull order. It is the latest in a case that has drawn international attention, including from senior White House officials. The Supreme Court of Canada’s decision, made on Wednesday, will temporarily halt the planned culling of the birds by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) while the owners appeal. It comes a day after police briefly arrested the owners of Universal Ostrich Farms for obstructing food inspection agents “from performing their…
The prime minister is set to announce that all adults in the UK will be required to own a new form of government-issued digital ID. It is understood that Sir Keir Starmer will set out the plans shortly. The proposals are the government’s latest bid to tackle illegal immigration, with the new ID being a form of proof of a citizen’s right to live and work in the UK. The so-called ‘Brit card’ will be subject to a consultation and would require legislation to be passed, before being rolled out. Under the proposals, anybody starting a new job would be…
Rescuers said at least 20 people have been injured in southern Israel after the Israeli military said a drone was launched from Yemen. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the drone struck the resort town of Eilat on the Red Sea coast, with attempts made to intercept it. The Magen David Adom emergency medical service said 20 people were taken to Yoseftal Hospital – including two men with serious limb injuries. The Iranian-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for the strike following the attack. A spokesman for the group, Yahya Sarea, said two drones targeted two “Israeli enemy targets” in a “successful”…
Malawi’s former President Peter Mutharika was declared the winner of last week’s elections, in a huge comeback for the 85-year-old. Official results show that he won 57% of the vote, compared to the 33% of President Lazarus Chakwera, 70. Chakwera, a pastor before entering politics, conceded defeat ahead of the final result being declared, phoning Mutharika to congratulate him on his “historic win”. Mutharika, a former professor of law, served as president from 2014 to 2020, when he lost to Chakwera by a wide margin. He inherits an economy that is in deep crisis, with a severe shortage of fuel…
The United Nations must implement reforms that reflect changing times or slide into irrelevance, President William Ruto has warned. He said the global organisation must become fit-for-purpose, its organs reformed, the mandate strengthened, and decisions aligned with current realities rather than the 1945 geopolitical situation. He noted that no matter how noble the UN’s origins or how impactful its legacy, it must adapt to remain relevant. “Institutions rarely fail because they lack vision or ideals; more often, they drift into irrelevance when they do not adapt, when they hesitate to act, and when they lose legitimacy,” he said. He was…
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has slammed the opposition for persistent empty rhetoric and promoting backward politics saying they have no development record to show Kenyans. Speaking on Wednesday when he addressed over 4,500 grassroots women in Mbeere North Constituency, Embu County, the DP called on residents not to fall to the cheap and retrogressive talk by the leading opposition figures. “The opposition has nothing to offer. They have no roads, no schools, no hospitals, and no development to show. Let us focus on the government of the day because that is where development comes from,” he stated. The DP outlined…
