Spanish giants Barcelona have redesigned their crest in conformity with modern times.
The new design, to take effect from next season, is ready and has been approved by the board pending the delegates nod.
“FC Barcelona is changing its crest in order to adapt to modern times. Since the design was last updated in 2002, the context, society and technology have changed enormously, and the symbols identified with the club need to evolve too,” the team management said in a statement.
According to the management, the most striking changes are an increase in the balance and impact of the team colours, the greater presence of a central and iconic element of the Barça style of play, namely the ball, the homogenisation of the forms and colours, and the disappearance of the FCB acronym.
The new strategy recognizes Barça, as one of the official brand names. Despite being widely used, it has never been treated as an official name. FC Barcelona is also the team’s official brand name.
Reasons for changing the crest
1.Since 1899, the club has regularly modified its crest in order to adapt to different times
2. The crest must be adapted to new digital needs and forms of consuming content
3. The current crest offers no guarantees of being accurately replicated in all media
4. The crest needs to be aligned with the brand strategy
5. This must be done while respecting the club’s roots and the origin of the crest itself
6. This must not hinder or endanger the recognisability of our symbol
7. The club needs a new crest that is comparable with those of other major brands
The modifications
1. Removal of black inner outlines
2. Removal of the FCB acronym
3. Increased visibility of the different symbols that make up the crest to thereby achieve greater harmony (Barcelona, Catalonia, Ball and Blaugrana Flag)
4. The number of ‘blaugrana’ stripes has been reduced from 7 to 5, thus improving the contrast and making the Barça colours stand out more
5. The position of the ball has been enhanced by moving it to a more central position.
