Bhang Worth Sh7.2 Million Recovered After Car Crashes Along Nakuru-Nairobi Highway
Police in Nakuru have recovered bhang worth approximately Sh7.2 million after a vehicle suspected to have been transporting the illicit drug was involved in a road accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
The incident occurred between Shinners Boys and the Mbaruk area after a Mazda CX-5 travelling from Nakuru towards Nairobi collided with an oncoming Scania trailer.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the SUV was attempting to overtake when he lost control of the vehicle.
The impact caused the Mazda CX-5 to spin and sustain extensive damage to its front section.
However, the driver abandoned the wreckage and fled the scene, leaving behind a consignment that police later established was bhang.
During processing of the accident scene, officers from Nakuru Central Police Station discovered six sacks containing the suspected narcotic.
The DCI said the consignment weighed 241.5 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of Sh7,245,000.
“The recovered narcotics weighed 241.5 kilogrammes with an estimated street value of Sh7,245,000,” the DCI said.
The recovered exhibits have since been secured, with detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Nakuru taking over the investigation.
Police have also launched a manhunt for the driver, who remains at large.
Detectives are expected to establish the source of the bhang, its intended destination and other individuals who may be linked to the suspected drug trafficking operation.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and ensuring that those involved in the illicit narcotics trade are brought to justice,” the DCI said.
