A bodyguard attached to the chairman of the National Social Security Fund lost his firearm after an official car he was in was involved in an accident in Embu on Sunday July 6.

He was in the car and they were in a convoy following President William Ruto’s motorcade on July 6 when the accident happened.

NSSF chairman David Kariuki’s car was involved in the accident that left a female pillion passenger dead and a rider with serious injuries.

This is after it rammed into a car ahead of it and landed in a river in the Kapingazi bridge along the Meru-Embu Road.

Kariuki, his driver and the bodyguard were injured and rushed to the hospital. They sustained minor injuries, officials said.

The bodyguard said before being taken to the hospital and after being rescued from the scene he realized his Barreta pistol with 15 bullets was missing.

He went back to the scene to check on the firearm but was attacked and chased by an angry mob that gad gathered there.

The mob later set the car on fire.

It was then that he was rushed to the Embu Level Four Hospital for medical attention and later discharged.

Police were sent to the scene and managed to disperse the mob and opened traffic on the busy highway.

The search for the weapon is ongoing, police said.

Police say fatal accidents have been on the rise amid efforts to contain the trend. Up to five people, majority of them riders and pedestrians are killed daily in separate accidents in the country.

This has a huge negative impact on families as many others are left with injuries that need a colossal amount of money to manage.

There is an ongoing campaign to address the menace, officials say.
