Bomb unearthed in Kerwa Farmland and safely detonated

A farming activity in Kerwa Sub-location, Kikuyu Sub-county, Kiambu County turned into a security incident when a local farmer discovered what appeared to be an explosive device buried in his field.

Police said a farmer and resident of Kerwa, was harrowing his shamba with a tractor when he unearthed a brown metallic object resembling a bomb on Thursday.

Realizing the potential danger, the farmer photographed the object and immediately reported the matter to Kerwa Police Station.

Police swiftly responded and cordoned off the area to keep residents safe.

Bomb disposal experts from the DCI National Forensic Bomb Disposal Unit were dispatched to the scene for further investigation.

Upon examination, the specialists confirmed that the device was an 80mm high-explosive unexploded ordnance (UXO) and that it was still active, police said.

The bomb disposal unit safely secured the device and took it into custody for further analysis and disposal.

Kiambu police commander Doris Mugambi confirmed that no injuries or damage were reported during the incident, and normalcy has since returned to the area. The origin of the explosive remains unknown.

Authorities have urged residents to report any suspicious metallic or explosive-like objects to the police immediately and avoid handling them, emphasizing that old wartime ordnance can remain dangerous even after decades underground.
