Police in Bomet are investigating a suspected murder-suicide after a nurse and his wife were found dead at their home in Sergoit Village, Cheboin Location, Bomet East Sub-County.

The deceased were identified as Joseph Kipkorir Kirui, 46, a nurse at Longisa County Referral Hospital, and his wife, Viola Cherotich, 42, a teacher at Kiromwok Primary School.

Police said Kirui was found hanging from a tree next to their house at about 6am on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

His 11-year-old son discovered the body while going outside to relieve himself and alerted neighbours, who informed the authorities.

Inside the house, officers found Cherotich lying lifeless on the matrimonial bed, covered with clothes and beddings.

Police said the couple had a history of domestic violence. The house was found ransacked and disorganised, while several used adrenaline vials were recovered at the scene.

Investigators also observed blood oozing from Cherotich’s mouth.

    No suicide note was recovered.

The couple lived with two of their children, while two others were in boarding school.

Crime Scene Investigation officers from Bomet processed the scene before the bodies were removed and taken to Longisa County Referral Hospital mortuary, where they are being preserved pending postmortem examinations.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths, with the postmortem expected to provide further clues.

Such incidents have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend.

Most of the victims are men, statistics show.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.

The government says efforts are being made to address the menace.
