Bunge la Mwananchi activist Evance Kawala arrested over alleged inflammatory utterances

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested Bunge la Mwananchi activist Evance Kawala after linking him inflammatory public utterances that have gone viral across social media platforms.

Officials said the content was deemed highly inciteful and a serious threat to public cohesion and national stability.

The suspect, 33-year-old Evans Onyango Kawala, aka Kidero Jasuba, was apprehended at the Shujaa Mall area in Kayole on Tuesday night following a well-coordinated operation by detectives from the Operations Support Unit (OSU).

He was detained for processing pending arraignment, police said.

The DCI cautioned the public against making public utterances or disseminating content that incites violence, spreads hatred, or undermines peace and national unity.

“Such acts amount to serious offences, and those found culpable will face firm legal action in accordance with the law.”

Siaya Governor James Orengo claimed he was arrested simply for speaking truth to power.

“To the Bunge La Mwananchi family: stay firm. We are actively on this case and will see it through to the end. Oppression only signals a government’s weakness. You can abduct a critic, but you cannot chain the spirit of defiance. We demand his immediate and unconditional release!” he said in a post.

It is not clear what he uttered that drew the attention of the police.

Police have been cracking down on perceived threats to stability in the country arresting and charging dozens of people.

Meanwhile, police officers from Machakos County Headquarters, acting on a tip-off from members of the public, conducted a successful operation targeting narcotic drugs and substance trafficking within Machakos Town.

During the operation, officers arrested one suspect found in possession of a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa.

The substance was packed in one green sack and further repackaged into 30 carrier bags.

Officers also detained a motorcycle believed to have been used in trafficking the suspected narcotic substance.

The suspect was booked at Machakos Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue.

Officials are intensifying operations against narcotic drugs and substance abuse to safeguard communities and protect public safety.
