CA Announces New Mobile Phone Technical Specifications

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has released new technical specifications for mobile cellular devices, which will take effect in 2026.
The standards will guide the type approval process for mobile phones intended for sale and use in the country.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, CA Director General/CEO David Mugonyi informed the public and ICT stakeholders — including equipment vendors, local assemblers, and manufacturers — of the updated requirements.
“It is notified for the general public and ICT sector stakeholders that the Authority has developed Technical Specifications for use during the type approval process for mobile cellular devices meant for sale and use in Kenya,” the notice read.
The authority highlighted that the regulations are part of its mandate to standardize telecommunications services and equipment, ensuring improved Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for consumers. The type approval process also evaluates safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radiation, and environmental compliance of devices.
The 2026 specifications can be accessed on the CA website under the Type Approval section at: https://www.ca.go.ke/market-structure.
Earlier, on February 10, 2026, the authority issued a warning against the sale and use of mobile phones that lack official type approval, emphasizing that unapproved devices may pose risks to consumers and violate regulatory standards.
Consumers and vendors are advised to ensure all devices meet CA’s approval requirements before purchase or sale.
