Cabinet Approves Sh2.47 Trillion Energy Plan to Connect 5.1 Million Households

The Cabinet has adopted the Kenya National Energy Compact, which seeks to mobilise approximately Sh2.47 trillion ($19 billion) in investment and connect an additional 5.1 million households to electricity by 2030.

In a dispatch following a Cabinet meeting chaired by President William Ruto at State House on Friday, the government said the initiative would expand electricity access in underserved communities, support enterprise growth and create opportunities for industrial development and employment.

The Cabinet also approved an $8.8 million (approximately Sh1.1 billion) electric cooking programme targeting the adoption of 100,000 electric cooking appliances in Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado counties.

“The Cabinet-endorsed initiative will promote cleaner cooking, reduce household exposure to harmful smoke and accelerate the transition to modern energy,” the dispatch read.

In a separate development, the Cabinet cleared three strategic road corridors for advancement under the Roads for Rural Economic Development Programme.

The projects include the 253-kilometre South Rift–Lake Region Gateway Corridor, the 256-kilometre Great Highlands Connectivity Corridor and the approximately 400-kilometre Lake Victoria Ring Road.

The roads are expected to connect agricultural production areas, fishing communities and trading centres to wider markets, reducing transport costs and travel times while improving access to economic opportunities.
