Cameroon President Paul Biya has assured that the country will be ready in time to successfully stage the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Biya was speaking after hosting a delegation from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) led by president Ahmad in Yaoundé Tuesday.

“Cameroon will be ready for the D-Day,” the long serving president, who will be seeking to extend his 36-year rule during Sunday’s presidential election, said.

Ahmad on his part said that Caf has never intended to take away the hosting rights from Cameroon and that they do not have a “plan B.”

The meeting that was intended to clear lingering doubts over the future of the tournament remaining in Cameroon was facilitated by legendary striker Samuel Eto’o.

“I thank Samuel Eto’o; it is thanks to him who has organized this visit to take away rumors left and right.

Caf does not have a plan B – Caf has never thought of withdrawing the competition from Cameroon.

We are here in Cameroon to say we are not the people organizing. It is Cameroon that is hosting this competition. It is Cameroon who can say tomorrow they are ready or give us time we are not ready,” Ahmad said.

Caf’s inspection team is expected to visit the country after the Sunday’s election to report on progress in terms of preparedness for the continental showpiece planned to kick-off 15 June to 13 July 2019.

There have been fears of slow progress in getting the necessary facilities ready in time to stage the tournament leading to speculations that Caf could be lining up a new host.
