Capital DT Sacco CEO charged over alleged Sh39 million theft

Capital DT Sacco Society Limited Chief Executive Officer Stephen Murithi has been charged before a Meru court over the alleged misappropriation of Sh39 million belonging to the savings and credit cooperative.

According to the charge sheet, Murithi is accused of stealing the money on various dates between February 23, 2026, and April 25, 2026, while serving as the Sacco’s Chief Executive Officer at its headquarters in Meru County.

The CEO was arrested by the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) Fraud Investigation Unit and faces three counts relating to the alleged theft.

The charge sheet alleges that Murithi unlawfully appropriated Sh39 million belonging to Capital DT Sacco, money that came into his possession by virtue of his position as the institution’s chief executive.

“On diverse dates between 23rd February, 2026 and 25th April, 2026 at Capital DT Sacco Society Ltd Head Office within Meru County, being the Chief Executive Officer of Capital DT Sacco Society, stole KSh39,000,000, property of Capital DT Sacco Society, which came into your possession by virtue of your employment,” the charge sheet states.

Murithi appeared before the court and pleaded to the charges before being released on a Sh1 million bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000, with two sureties.

The court scheduled the matter for mention on August 19, 2026, while the hearing is set to begin on October 15, 2026.
