Chaos as Moi Gesusu students in Kisii go on rampage over poor exam results

Property of unknown value was destroyed Sarturday evening following a strike by students of Moi Gesusu High School in Masaba South, Kisii County.

The students were protesting poor performance in the recently released KCSE results.

The unrest began shortly after Sabbath service late Saturday with thr students vandalising property inside the school before forcing their way out into the Keroka -Nyangusu highway where they blocked traffic for hours.

Photos gleaned from the extra County school showed smashed glasses and torn books scattered on the floor of what appears an extensively vandalised class.

Outside the streets, they chanted slogans castigating the principal Innocent Momanyi.

Momanyi did not respond to phone calls from this journalist.

The students also accused him of high-handedness and failing to adequately prepare the candidates for the examinations.
They vowed to eject him if they spot him within the school precincts.

“The least we want to hear of him is that he should be out of this school, he should send someone for his belongings,” said one student who requested anonymity.
There was no comment from the school management.
No injuries were reported, but several classrooms and offices were damaged

Later police were called in to contain the situation and prevent further destruction.
The police managed to drive the group back to their school.
Some residents condemned the violence, describing it as unacceptable .

“While we understand students’ concerns about performance, destroying property is not the solution. Proper channels exist for airing grievances,” said John Nyakonu, a resident.
