I Have Been Charged With Treason Before, AG Should Not Touch That Button – Raila

Nasa leader Raila Odinga has spoken on the treason charge for the first time since Attorney General Githu Muigai issued a statement that Odinga will be charged with treason, punishable by death if he goes ahead and swears himself in as President.
In an Interview the former Premier granted to Sunday Standard, Odinga said the statement AG Githu who is his neighbor and former tenant in Karen was “unfortunate and irresponsible.”
“He misses the point completely. This is blackmail and intimidation. He should know I have been charged with treason before, spent six months in Kamiti and the state terminated the suit because they could not prove the charges. He should not touch that button,” Raila said.
Raila reiterated that the Tuesday swearing in was on course but clarified that he will not storm Kisumu State House as alleged by some Jubilee brass.

He said him being sworn in as President was a means to an end thus enabling a more strong push for Electoral reforms, restructuring the executive, entrenching judicial independence, police reforms and strengthening devolution, the five things he is very passionate about at the moment.
It is not the treason charges that make the political colossus shudder but the possible purvey of might by the State often meted on his innocent supporters.

“I am afraid that we are living at a time when the powers that be think that might is right. Drafters of the Constitution envisaged an independent Inspector General of Police but unfortunately MPs amended the law to give the President powers to appoint top police command. Now on orders from above they kill innocent Kenyans,” he said.
