Chinese pay television services operator StarTimes has been barred by a South African court from broadcasting indecent videos.

StarTimes through its affiliate StarSat and its parent company have been slapped with the ban after an organisation called Justice Alliance of SA (JASA) and Justice and Doctors for Life went to court to block the move by South Africa’s communications regulator, Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA), to issue StarSat with the license to broadcast adult content.

The Chinese owned broadcaster was issued with the license in April 2014, allowing it to air hard-core adult videos on dedicated channels.

Church pastors from as far as Kampala in Uganda have welcomed the move with Pastor David Mulindwa of the African Unity Church in Kampala terming it a win against immorality in Africa.

The clergyman said that StarTimes owes the continent an apology and should be banned if they can’t respect family values in the continent.

StarTimes has a presence in East Africa also but has not applied to broadcast explicit content like they did in South Africa.
