Chris Murphy is a prominent American politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Connecticut since 2013.

Born Christopher Scott Murphy on August 3, 1973, in White Plains, New York, he moved with his family to Wethersfield, Connecticut, during his childhood.
He is of Irish and Polish descent, with his father, Scott L. Murphy, working as a corporate lawyer and managing partner at the Hartford law firm Shipman & Goodwin, and his mother, Catherine Murphy, serving as a retired ESL teacher at Hanmer Elementary School in Wethersfield.

During law school, he entered public office by winning election to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1998, serving from 1999 to 2003.

He then advanced to the Connecticut State Senate, representing the 16th district from 2003 to 2006.
In 2006, Murphy successfully challenged incumbent Republican Nancy Johnson to win a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Connecticut’s 5th congressional district, holding the position through three terms until 2013.
During his House tenure, he focused on veterans’ housing, job creation, and affordable healthcare, notably authoring the Frank Melville Supportive Housing Investment Act, which was signed into law in 2010 to bolster housing programs for people with disabilities.
In 2012, Murphy ran for the U.S. Senate and defeated Republican Linda McMahon, taking office in 2013.
He has since been reelected, including a strong victory in 2024.
