Christian Lundgaard is a Danish professional racing driver born on July 23, 2001, in Hedensted, Denmark, renowned for his rapid ascent through the ranks of international motorsport.

At just 24 years old as of October 2025, Lundgaard has established himself as one of the most promising talents in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, where he competes for Arrow McLaren in the No. 7 Chevrolet.

Growing up immersed in a family deeply rooted in racing traditions, Lundgaard began karting at the age of six, quickly demonstrating exceptional speed and racecraft that propelled him into single-seater racing by his mid-teens.

His career trajectory has taken him from European karting championships to the high-stakes world of Formula 2 and now IndyCar, where he made history as the first Danish driver to win a race in the series.

    Siblings

Christian has one sibling, his older brother Daniel.

Daniel, like Christian, pursued a racing career in his youth, competing alongside his younger brother in the 2017 F4 Danish Championship, where the two Lundgaard siblings battled on the track in what was a formative season for Christian’s single-seater debut.

Although Daniel stepped away from active racing to focus on other pursuits, his influence remains indelible; today, he channels his expertise into designing Christian’s custom race helmets, blending artistry with functionality to create pieces that not only protect but also reflect the driver’s personal style.

Daniel is a frequent presence at Christian’s races, offering support from the sidelines and embodying the tight-knit bond that has sustained the brothers through the rigors of a globetrotting career.

    Career

Lundgaard’s racing career is a testament to precocious talent and relentless progression, beginning in the adrenaline-fueled world of karting and evolving into a starring role in one of America’s premier open-wheel series.

He kicked off his professional journey in 2012 at the tender age of 11, tearing through European karting circuits and amassing three major titles, including the prestigious CIK-FIA European Karting Championship in 2015—a feat that marked him as one of the continent’s brightest prospects and earned him a fifth-place ranking on Motorsport.com’s list of top karting talents with future potential.

Transitioning seamlessly to single-seaters in 2017 at just 15 years old, Lundgaard joined MP Motorsport for the SMP F4 and Spanish F4 championships, where he dominated from the outset, securing nine wins in SMP F4 to claim the title with a round to spare and sweeping all races at Aragón in the Spanish series to lock in that championship as well.

The following year, 2018, saw him step up to the Formula Renault Eurocup with the same team, where he notched four victories en route to Rookie of the Year honors and a runner-up finish overall, narrowly missing the crown to fellow Renault junior Max Fewtrell.

Promoted to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2019 with ART Grand Prix, Lundgaard adapted quickly to the increased competition, scoring his maiden F3 win at the Hungaroring and finishing a strong sixth in the standings despite the series’ ups and downs.

His momentum carried into the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship, still with ART, where he celebrated two feature race triumphs—at Spa-Francorchamps and Mugello, the latter on a pole lap that set a circuit record—culminating in a seventh-place championship result amid a season disrupted by the global pandemic.

As an Alpine (formerly Renault) junior academy member, Lundgaard tested the waters of American racing in late 2020 with a Formula Regional Americas outing and a Formula 3 support race at the Macau Grand Prix, where he placed fourth.

The pivotal shift came in 2021 when he debuted in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, qualifying an impressive fourth on the Indianapolis road course in his very first start and later becoming the first Dane to compete in the Indianapolis 500.

Over three full seasons with RLL from 2022 to 2024, he earned Rookie of the Year laurels in 2022, notched multiple podiums including a runner-up at the Gallagher Grand Prix, and broke through with his landmark first IndyCar victory from pole at the 2023 Honda Indy Toronto—Denmark’s inaugural win in the series—while finishing eighth in points that year and 11th in 2024 despite oval challenges.

Seeking a fresh challenge, Lundgaard joined Arrow McLaren for the 2025 season, inheriting the No. 7 entry and immediately elevating its fortunes with a breakout campaign: six podiums, three pole positions (including one at Portland despite a penalty drop), an eighth-place start and seventh-place finish in the Indy 500, and a career-best fifth in the final standings.

    Accolades

In karting, Lundgaard’s 2015 CIK-FIA European Championship title stands as an early pinnacle, showcasing the raw talent that would define his path.

Bursting onto the single-seater scene, he swept the 2017 SMP F4 Championship with nine wins, seven poles, and ten fastest laps—clinching the crown early—and mirrored that success by winning the Spanish F4 title with six victories, including a clean sweep at Aragón.

His 2018 Formula Renault Eurocup campaign yielded Rookie of the Year honors alongside four wins and vice-champion status, a near-perfect bridge to higher tiers.

In FIA Formula 3 during 2019, Lundgaard’s Hungaroring triumph anchored a sixth-place finish, while his 2020 Formula 2 stint added two feature race wins—at Spa and Mugello, the latter on a record-setting pole—and a seventh in points, underscoring his adaptability in Formula 1’s feeder series.

Crossing to America, Lundgaard’s INDYCAR accolades began with 2022 Rookie of the Year plaudits, bolstered by a second-place at the Gallagher Grand Prix and consistent top-fives.

The 2023 season elevated him further: his Toronto pole-to-win victory etched him into history as IndyCar’s first Danish victor, complemented by two poles total (including IMS), multiple podiums, and an eighth-place championship ranking.

By 2024, a third-place at the Indianapolis Grand Prix capped a 11th-in-points effort, but it was 2025 with Arrow McLaren that unleashed his most decorated year yet—six podiums (more than his prior three across 52 starts), three NTT P1 Awards (Portland, IMS, and Laguna Seca track record), a career-high seventh at the Indy 500 from eighth on the grid, and a fifth-place points finish, all while leading 49 laps through the first five races and posting career-best averages on streets (eighth) and roads.
