Chwele Market Mourns Four Traders Killed in Mai Mahiu Accident
CHWELE, BUNGOMA — Four traders from Chwele Market in Bungoma County have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident in Mai Mahiu. Five other members of the business community were injured and are receiving treatment.
The deceased have been identified as Mercyline Wefwafwa, Centrine Juma, Jane Baraza, and a trader known as Anthony. They were part of Chwele’s tomato-trading community. Reports indicate the traders were travelling to Karatina to procure groceries when the accident occurred.
The incident has plunged the Chwele business community and Bungoma County into deep grief. Families, friends, and colleagues are mourning the loss of the four traders, described as hardworking individuals who were dedicated to their businesses and families.
President William Ruto sent condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka assured the affected families of the county government’s support. Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga organized transport to help families travel to Mai Mahiu to bring their loved ones home, with area MCA Hon. Eric Wekesa accompanying them.
The accident has renewed concerns about road safety in the country. It serves as a painful reminder of the risks traders, travellers, and families face on Kenyan roads every day. The incident has sparked calls for safer roads, responsible driving, and improved emergency response.
